Skincare switch-up season by season

SKINCARE SWITCH-UP SEASON BY SEASON

We switch from summer t-shirts and sandals to winter jackets and boots, so why shouldn't we adjust our skincare routines too? Are you intrigued? Keep reading to discover more about how to build your skincare routine season by season.

Our skin is very sensitive to the external factors that change over the year, such as weather and temperatures. The effects of seasonal changes for the skin have raised interest in the past few years, and many researchers have started looking more into it to investigate how we accommodate our routine the best to fit our skin’s varying needs.

To maintain our skin’s health all year round, we need to take care of it with different actives that perfectly match every seasonal physical adaptation.

 Winter skincare routine: repair

Winter climate can be very damaging to the skin, and especially harsh wind and cold temperatures can dry it out and leave it more sensitive and red-looking. Recent studies have highlighted that during winter, people tend to have higher values of TEWL (trans epidermal water loss), which means that more water evaporates from the skin than is absorbed, ultimately resulting in dryer skin. This is why your main skincare focus should be to repair your skin barrier and deeply moisturize your skin during the colder months, as a well-hydrated and functional skin barrier will retain water more efficiently.

Because an unbalanced skin barrier also leads to more sensitive skin, we suggest you start your winter routine with an extra-gentle cleanser, like our Cleansing Balm. Its oil-based formula will help you cleanse your face without stripping the skin of its natural oils. If your skin is very dry, applying your Intense Hydra Serum in between your cleanser and moisturizer will be the perfect addition to restore your skin’s smoothness.

If your skin starts to feel tight, it’s most likely because it’s in need of more hydration. Whether you opt for a lighter or more rich formula for your moisturizer should depend on your skin’s level of dryness and the concerns you want to address. So, let's present you to some essential choices. Our fragrance-free Daily Hydra Cream Sensitive is formulated with skin-balancing actibiome and replenishing hyaluronic acid – a perfect choice for sensitive skin types still in need of a hydration boost.

Our Ultra-Rich Cream is formulated with strengthening niacinamide, brightening vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid to restore a compromised barrier and promote a smooth, buttery-soft surface.

Oh, and don't let your guard down because you may believe the sun’s rays are less intense during winter. In other words: Don’t forget to apply SPF as the last step of your AM routine – yes, even if it’s cloudy outside.

EXTRA TIP: If you experience skin dryness all year round, this concern may worsen during wintertime, especially for the parts of the body that are more exposed to air, such as hands, lips, nose, and ears. In the worst case, your dry skin may even develop painful cracks and wounds. To prevent this from happening, make sure you use a good hand cream and lip balm, such as our Repairing Hand Balm and Instant Repair Balm.

Spring skincare routine: soothe

Spring weather is often kinder to our skin, making it the perfect season to target specific skin needs and prepare for summer. At the beginning though, you may experience your skin being more reactive. This could be due to adaptation to the hotter weather, but irritation can also happen as a response to flowers pollen in the air. As a result, your skin can end up looking redder and being more irritated than usual. To avoid this, we advise you to focus your skincare routine on soothing actives. Most products in our skincare line contain Aloe Leaf Extract, which is one of the most effective soothing ingredients.

As the days get longer and the temperatures rise, I bet that you’ll start craving a more glowy appearance. By using a few pumps of our Sun Drops in your Daily Hydra Cream orVitamin Face Oil, you can prep for summer and achieve that sun-kissed radiance without sun exposure.

Summer skincare routine: protect

Warmer weather is finally here, which means that we are probably going to spend more time outside under the hot summer sun. Therefore, your primary focus during this season would be to protect your skin from sun damage. Our entire sun care line is formulated with gentle, deeply moisturizing ingredients as well as protective, broad-spectrum UV filters. Furthermore, their formulas are enriched with the antioxidant vitamin E, which helps prevent premature signs of aging caused by sun rays. For an extra-antioxidative effect, try implementing our Vitamin E Serum or Vitamin Lifting Serum in your summer routine.

The warmer season may come with more oily skin, so to make sure that you remove all build-up from your pores, we highly suggest trying double cleansing by pairing our cleansing balm with our Daily Foaming Cleanser.

When it comes to your moisturizer, generally, studies have shown that people tend to have lower TEWL values during summer (meaning: more water is locked in our skin and dryness is not as widespread of a concern). However, I’d advise you to not give up on your moisturizer (ever). For this particular time of year, a lighter texture and formulation might be more suitable. Reach for our lightweight yet intensely nourishing 24-Hour Hydra Gel or Daily Mineral GelAnd for a hydrating fresh up on the go, make sure to slip our Niacinamide Lifting Mist in your bag.

Autumn skincare routine: restore

During summer, our skin is exposed to a lot of external stressors, from higher temperatures that increase sweat production, to sunrays that may accelerate skin aging. Therefore, autumn is the ideal time to restore our skin and enhance its vital appearance.

First things first: You have to free your pores from all the build-up of excess oil and sweat that your skin has produced during the warmer season. The best way to do this is with a deeply exfoliating product. You can choose either a chemical exfoliant, such as our Intense Peel Mask, or a mechanical one, such as our Deep Cleansing Scrub. And if your skin tends to develop impurities all year round, try using our Skin Perfector 2% BHA to enrich your skin with its purifying properties.

After having deeply cleansed and unclogged your pores, your skin will be ready for a restoring post-summer routine. Hyperpigmentation and dullness are two of the most searched-for post-sun exposure skin concerns after summer. To target both of them with only one product, the most suitable choice would be our  Vitamin A Treatment Cream. Vitamin A is a multifunctional active that brightens up your skin tone, improves skin discolorations, and prevents premature signs of aging, all at the same time. Not bad, huh?
