A new year calls for new beginnings – so let’s make sure we start 2023 off right. To keep our routines as essential as possible, we’re bringing some of our most beloved skincare trends along into the new year, while reflecting on trends that were – put mildly – not so great.
So, without further ado, let’s take a look into our crystal ball…
3 TRENDS THAT WON’T MAKE IT
BYE BYE SLUGGING
Taking our TikTok for you-pages and Instagram feeds by storm during 2022, the trend of slugging involves sealing your skin with a petrolatum-based product overnight with the purpose to wake up to thoroughly plumped and smooth skin.
While the issue might not so much be the practice itself, promoting it for every skin type is where things go south. Though the jelly-like substance is known for being too thick to clog up pores, the shield it forms on the skin will not only lock in skincare-goodies, but also debris and the skin’s natural oils, potentially causing breakouts and blackheads.
Endorsing this trend for oily and breakout-prone skin can therefore lead to (drastically) more harm than good – and if you’re dealing with dry skin in need of a boost, we’d always recommend opting for a nourishing mask instead of overwhelming it with new, intense experiments.
NO MORE TOOTPHASTE ON PIMPLES
Toothpaste on pimples is a trend that goes way back – and somehow still hasn’t found its way out of many people’s routines. Not only does this trend not recommend one specific toothpaste, but “the trick” can be done with any kind of toothpaste, according to the trend.
However, many toothpastes contain ingredients that can end up harming your skin, making the spot even worse by irritating it. Therefore, we always recommend that you reach for spot treatments formulated for this specific purpose – because in this case, DIY remedies are rarely better.
Yes, it's as bad as it sounds. Unfortunately, this trend has dominated many of our social media feeds, suggesting that many people out there have put their skin through this harming ritual. Sunscreen contouring means applying a lower SPF (or none at all) on the areas of your face you’d normally contour with make-up – such as your cheekbones. The goal is to achieve a deeper tan on these areas, giving them a contouring effect.
We think the backfiring potential of this trend is pretty obvious, but let’s sum it up anyways: More exposure equals more harm on the skin, potentially leading to reactions such as premature signs of aging, sunburns, and in extreme cases even skin cancer. Put shortly: It’s not worth the hype.
3 TRENDS WE'LL BRING ALONG
DOUBLE CLEANSING – DOUBLE THE INDULGEMENT
There’s nothing better than a thorough cleansing to wash away the day and prepare yourself for a good night’s sleep. And though popular, we believe double cleansing hasn’t had its peak quite yet. A nourishing double cleansing is a two-part process: First, you clean your face with an oil-based cleanser to remove make-up, SPF, and other debris. Then, you go in with your water-based cleanser to deeply cleanse the skin layers from pollution, build-up, and stubborn impurities. We love to combine our oil-based and vitamin-infused Cleansing Balm with our water-based and refreshing Daily Foaming Cleanser for this exact purpose. 100% natural cleansing actives, 100% indulging.
HELLO, GUA SHA
Let’s be honest: Selfcare has always been and will always be on the agenda – as it should. 2022 put well-deserved spotlight on Gua Sha’s and other skincare tools that promote healthy skin inside out.
Though its rise in popularity, this remedy isn’t breaking news either – as in, not at all. The use of Gua Shas date back to ancient China, and we cross our fingers that it, with its healing and indulging properties, is here to stay.
We always reach for our Sculpting Face Gua Sha when we want our much needed me-time rituals to feel extra luxurious. An enriching massage combined with various benefits such as sculpting + toning properties? Sign us up!
And through 2022, we’ve seen more and more people elevate their Gua Sha routines by applying the skincare tool to their bodies as well. We’re talking tension-relieving and tightening effects – with some even experiencing that their Gua Sha helps reduce cellulite by promoting a healthy blood distribution in their body. So, if you haven't yet, meet Gua Sha: The ideal relaxing treatment for your face, body, and mind.
MINIMALISTIC SKINCARE – YES, PLEASE
The trend of minimalism has left its traces on more than just our skincare shelfs. The minimalistic lifestyle, closet, and make-up regimen have been great approaches to a more sustainable and easy-going everyday life for most. And this less-is-more approach has also moved to people’s skincare routines, where the 12-step routine has been reduced to some essential stables that do the job. We’re all for listening to your skin’s needs and splurging on indulging products, but we also endorse a simple yet effective routine. As long as you’re listening to your skin, the minimalistic routine can surely be just as enriching.
