Why do breakouts often come with summer?
Breakouts occur when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. This environment is ideal for bacteria to thrive, leading to inflammation and the formation of impurities, blackheads, or even painful cysts. Several factors contribute to breakouts, especially in summer.
Heat and humidity stimulate the skin’s oil glands to produce more sebum, which can clog pores, while sweating heavily and increased exposure to dirt and pollutants can further congest pores. While essential for sun protection, some sunscreens and heavy cosmetics can also contribute to pore blockage if not thoroughly removed when the day is over, simply because the formula can cover or clog the skin’s pores for extended periods of time.
When breakouts occur, several biological processes unfold. One of these is inflammation, where the body’s immune response kicks in, causing redness, swelling, and discomfort around the affected area. Bacteria can exacerbate inflammation within the skin, contributing to the development of breakouts.
As the impurities heal, the skin undergoes a repair process that may involve scarring, if the breakout was severe.
How to treat and counteract summer breakouts
Several steps in your routine can help prevent and treat existing breakouts. We've gathered some of the steps that will make a difference for your summer skin.
Cleanse regularly
Use a gentle cleanser twice daily to remove excess oil, sweat, and dirt without stripping the skin of its natural, necessary oils. Additionally, look for non-comedogenic products, such as water-based cleansers, to prevent pore clogging. Also, showering promptly after sweating helps remove sweat and oils that can contribute to breakouts.
Hydration is key
Proper hydration helps maintain skin health and balance the skin's oil production. If you’re struggling with breakouts, opt for oil-free moisturizers with lightweight, water-based formulas.
In summer, we especially love our 24-Hour Hydra Gel, which instantly and intensely indulges the skin with deep-diving hydration while leaving a matte layer on the surface of the skin. The formula quickly absorbs into the skin to prevent any greasy residue and to ensure that your skin gets the most out of every benefit it offers.
Sun protection is non-negotiable
Choose lightweight, breathable sunscreens with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin without aggravating breakouts.
No touching!
Resist the urge to touch or pick at pimples, as this can worsen inflammation and lead to scarring.
Use topical treatments with active ingredients
Over-the-counter treatments containing salicylic acid can help reduce bacteria and unclog pores. We recommend using our Skin Perfector 2% BHA, which is infused with both pore-decongesting salicylic acid as well as brightening vitamin C to enhance an even skin tone and texture. The smoothing formula can also be used on the body, such as arms or on the back, to prevent and treat bodily breakouts.
Tweak your skincare routine if needed
If your skin is on the oily side, or tends to become it during the summer season, consider switching to lighter skincare products during the summer to accommodate a potentially increased oil production.
One way to do so is, as mentioned, to switch from oil-based to water-based formulas to leave a lighter, more breathable layer. Make sure to use fast-absorbing products that won't rest on the skin and either bother you or be removed while sweating. If you wish to do so, it can also be beneficial to shift to lighter makeup rituals, for example laying off foundation during the warm season. Again, this will allow the skin to breathe better, counteracting the possibility of clogged pores and, therefore, breakouts.
Managing breakouts in the summer heat, therefore, requires diligence and a tailored skincare routine. Remember, consistency and gentle care are key to maintaining healthy skin year-round. If breakouts persist despite home care, seeking advice from a dermatologist can provide personalized solutions to keep your skin looking and feeling its best.
And, of course, you’re always more than welcome to contact us for any tips or tailored routines for your unique skin’s needs.
